Review s Nowadays, most cabins are built at a factory and slotted in at the shipyard, resulting in identical accommodations across ships, fleets and even cruise lines. Prinsendam is unique in. With two Live from reports from the Prinsendam currently on-going, this feels a little redundant, but, I thought Id write a quick review of our Heart of Bordeaux trip. Ill mention the ports in passing, but, since the itinerary isnt that common, Ill refrain from in-depth accounts of each one -- if. The Prinsendam incident is an excellent example of how a coordinated rescue effort, using sophisticated aviation and communications systems, can lead to the successful resolution of what, just a few years earlier, would have been just another maritime tragedy. HAL’s smallest and oldest ship, the 38,ton, passenger Prinsendam is cozy and appealing for . The following review, covering the first three cruises of the "new" Prinsendam, is submitted. We are married, age group, from Florida, and have been on ten cruises, including these.
Lauderdale, but have stayed over prior to a couple of cruises. This time we use AirBnb and stayed in a small apartment overlooking a small canal - a real look living there.
We spent several hours on the Railway trail. This is purported to be for walking and cycling, but unfortunately the effort to keep motor vehicles off the trail, they have made it almost unusable for cyclists.
We rode a section from Hamilton toward Dockyards, then took the lower road back to town. I'd like to return to Bermuda, maybe on a cruise that stays a night or two.
Hamilton is a great port, with good public transport by bus or ferry. I think it's definitely a place that a couple of days would be wonderful.
Okay, Le Havre is really just a place to go from. We rented a car and went to Giverny to see Monet's gardens, then spent an hour or so in Honfleur.
Neither of these places are easily accessed with public transport during a port stay. There is a bus to Honfleur but limited schedule, which is unfortunate since it's a lovely small historic town.
Using a car was a good choice, but the car rental company supposedly Dollar or Thrifty, but in reality run out of a Hertz truck rental location was not one I would ever choose again.
If you can find a downtown rental location, do that instead. We had a very rainy day the Seine and many other rivers were flooding , but had an hour or so in each stop to enjoy without rain.
This is actually Zeebrugge but with relatively usable public transport to Bruges combining a ship transfer and train.
We chose to go to Damme instead since we've been to Bruges lovely though it is. Damme is the "off the beaten track" spot, so very quiet, even with a few tour buses.
Others took the tram all day ticket and explored the coastline. Hamburg was a mixed bag for us. Germany has a great cycling system, so we had hoped to explore by bike.
However, it seems to have missed Hamburg. Since we had an overnight there, we chose to leave the bike on the ship the second day and took the "free walking tour".
We had a great guide 3rd generation in Hamburg , so that was a great option. The highlight for many was the Miniature Museum near the port - it sounded amazing, but we just didn't have the energy after the walking tour.
This port was actually a bit of a surprise. We cycled into Lubeck and back from the port, so had the chance to get out in the countryside - really nice day.
Lubeck itself was quite busy with tourists, but fun to see - found a simple amber necklace for my grand-daughter in the old market square.
Several people actually enjoyed the seaside town of Travemunde every bit as much as Lubeck. Fortunately the cruise line supplied a free shuttle to both towns.
These aren't advertised much in advance, but were a good option in a number of ports. Tallinn is a great port we've been there before , but with several ships in port, it really was quite overrun by tourists.
You really need to get into the back streets as much as possible. It was a rainy day again, so that impacted the enjoyment of the town. Two days in St.
Thus Disney, thus 3 days. Embarkation was I don't understand why people are so afraid of cruises. Cruise ships are probably the safest places in the world.
I wish all services ashore were so professional in terms of Covid prevention. Before boarding the We went for our 25th anniversary and had the absolutely most spectacular time of our lives.
The food was phenomenal. One day the chef made pork adobo especially for us. He was from the Philippines and found out my We chose this cruise as we were going to Australia and wanted to visit New Zealand whilst we were in that part of the world.
So we went to Brisbane to board the ship and first of all it was a fiasco at the port, I took this cruise because it was a rock n roll cruise.
The problem was the Moody Cruise staff. They were rude and abrasive to the passengers. The head of security was seen grabbing a woman by the arm and pulling We been cruising for over 10yrs and seeing Norwegian getting First Mediterranean cruise, I've been on 10 total cruises.
Service was great staff was friendly, restaurant staff was friendly and entertaining and was really involved in keeping our young children smiling.
Royal Caribbean 2 night "Opening Cruise" - First RCI cruise post-pandemic. We booked this cruise as it was the first sailing by RCI after the pandemic had started, and it was one of the few travel options available to Singaporeans, and we are also regular RCI cruisers, so it was an easy Took a short break just to get out of Singapore.
Check-in : Ship sail is at 9pm. My Covid test was at 5pm. We were on board the ship at Places smaller than normal: -Small buffet with the same options especially at lunch not a lot of fruit, cheese, etc.
Petersburg was not enough either, even though the Russian visa "squeeze" limited us to the overly expensive ship's tours. Other lines spend three days two nights in St.
Petersburg, and have more and better tour offerings. This city was the site of one of the most heroic siege defenses in all history: days during World War II.
Some lines offer tours highlighting this epic struggle, but none was available from Holland-American, unfortunately.
Based on our experience, the tours available seemed highly overpriced. We had time for shopping in downtown Belfast where the taxi dropped us at the end of our tour.
We saw more in less time at less than half the cost, even viewing some fallout from "the troubles": bricks in the street and nasty signs.
The only glitch was the return shuttle bus was not where the ship's tour office said it would be. I spotted and flagged it down at a traffic light, but others weren't so lucky.
The tour office on board was good at selling tours, but hard to find open. The saving grace was Frank, the port lecturer, a truly amazing man.
What a font of knowledge! His advice was invariably accurate, unbiased, comprehensive and witty. Overall, there were a number of good tours, including the one to Kinsale from Cobh, the hastily arranged tour to Stonehenge and Salisbury from Southampton, the tour of Bilbao and its new museum, and the Hermitage at the Winter Palace in St.
After taking a wine country tour from Bordeaux, we were skeptical of the price vs. On the Bordeaux tour, the bus was uncomfortable, the guide poor, and the winery awful.
We were given a single glass of a white wine which I suspect didn't sell very well. The train was old and shabby, much like parts of the ship.
The "snacks" provided were awful. They didn't even have coffee on the train, which left at AM. Our guide in Berlin was an archetypical German, straight by the book.
He seemed inexperienced, and stood faced back into the bus instead of sitting facing forward, paying attention to where we were, and commenting on what we were actually seeing.
Consequently, his talk was often out of sync with what we were passing, but he rigidly stuck to his script, even when passengers asked what he was talking about.
He gave us long break at the Brandenburg Gate, which you couldn't even see as it was being repaired, shrouded in a huge ad! This caused us to fall behind schedule, so he by-passed the Reichstag, one of the more interesting sights, to insure we were on time for lunch!
No German is late! It is Verboten! After lunch we had a break in a shopping district, but it was Sunday. Stores aren't open in Germany on Sunday.
We could window shop. It was just a little too far away from a lively, interesting looking flea market we had passed to get there and back, independently during the break.
Why not take our break there? Absolutely not! Why, someone might enjoy themselves and forget the time! First, we had to pick up the passengers who took the longer Berlin tour ending in Potsdam, far to the west.
So for an hour and a half we rode around Berlin, through what seemed an endless train yard, to the Potsdam station.
The "snack" on the way back which the hotel director personally told me would be "substantial" , was a stale bagel with less than a smear of cheese and wilted lettuce, with juice, a piece of candy and fruit.
An unpleasant end to a long, disappointing day in a very interesting city. The good news was they kept the Lido open so we could get a bite to eat when we finally got back on board.
The tours in St. Petersburg were quite good, particularly the Hermitage. This is a truly magnificent building, full of impressive art and artifacts, many with interesting stories.
The quirk was that our guide, usually quite thorough, basically refused to guide us through the modern 20th century galleries at the back of the building.
She told us we could walk through them and meet her at the far end in 20 minutes or so. Then she disappeared. Later I asked her why, but got no real answer.
I suspect she felt the modern pieces aren't real art. Next day, the tour of Imperial St. Petersburg with hydrofoil boat ride on the Neva River to Petrohof was interesting but a little too long.
The bus driver nearly flew on the way back; I guess they were afraid we'd miss the boat. Earlier, the tour of Bilbao and its new Frank Gerry-designed titanium sheeted Guggenheim Museum was fascinating.
Bilbao is a really intriguing urban setting with many squares surrounded by four and five story buildings. At street level are shops and other retail businesses.
On the floor just above are professional offices, above that are apartments. Just the mix that makes for a lively, livable city!
Very rough tendering experience but once on land, it was great! The bikes were near the pier. Great bikes! Picturesque cycle through the old town followed by serene countryside, a tea break at a princess's house, and a bit of a climb to fabulous cliff views.
The guide was a very knowledgeable historian who also provided botany lessons about the various plants we saw along the way.
My only complaint is that I wanted to stop more often to take photos but did not want to lose the group! Find a Cruise. Home Holland America Line Cruises Holland America Prinsendam Cruise Reviews Member Review.

Isaac's Cathedral.Overall, the ship was not very well maintained with a lot of rust all over. There are two pools and a lovely traditional wraparound promenade for strolls and lap walking. Afterwards, some of our group wanted to go see Dammes, while others wanted to stay in Brugges, so Mike, our guide, drove DH and one other of our group to Dammes, and then we met up about 90 mins later.
